PSA: Clear your Search History around the Holidays

A true story of how Facebook might be ruining the holidays.

So this is blog is more of a story than the rest of my blogs thus far. Last December I was driving in the car and I was listening to a radio talkshow, which I never do unless there is absolutely nothing else playing. The radio guy was talking about the holidays and how Thanksgiving had just ended, therefore people are already in Christmas mode. AKA putting up lights and decorations and buying gifts… so many gifts. Then he started talking about how Facebook is ruining the surprise of gift giving for him and his wife. He said that since they both use one main computer at their house, they are both searching online what to get the other. Facebook and other social medias use what you are searching for as what to filter your ads as on the website.

He logged onto Facebook the other day and he figured out all the things his wife may be getting him for Christmas because of the ads that were popping up on his page, and his wife found out the same from her page. I think this is kind of funny, but it also sucks. That ruins the surprise. I feel like there should be some control over what Facebook and other platforms are able to see you searching. The best solution I can think of is to clear your search history of your computer after looking for gifts for someone. This way social media sites won’t be able to filter those products out and advertise.

This goes for any special occasion that you are trying to get a gift for someone, or keep something a surprise. It also doesn’t just necessarily have to be limited to Facebook either. Facebook is just very into showing recent ads and what not, but other social media mediums do as well like Instagram and Twitter. It’s like that Christmas saying “he sees you when you’re sleeping he knows when you’re awake…” but in this case it’s not Santa who’s watching, it’s Facebook.

I know this is an advertising blog, but sometimes ads get in the way and are annoying. Even though I am going to be making a living off advertising and marketing, I would not want it to ruin holiday or birthday surprises. So, be careful for upcoming holidays and surprises for people… Facebook is watching.
